Schools only covered the first 3 grades--when schools existed. George Washington, like many men, were self-taught. He went to live on his older brother's farm where 17 year old George taught himself how to do surveys of land. The older neighbor--the father in law of George's brother--lived next door and often visited. The older man had a library of books, which he allowed George to read; the man also tutored George while they visited. Later, this same man sent young George Washington over the Blue Ridge Mountains to survey the man's 4000 acres there. At the time, everyone believed the total land of the US "ended" shortly after the Blue Ridge Mountains... over time, as George and other explorers continued into Ohio etc., they realized the US went many miles further. Again, much later, they believed the US ended 'about' at the Mississippi River. Once again, explorers discovered this was untrue. But George was one of those early surveyors-explorers who returned with great tales of the land, the plants, and Native Americans. George spent most of his time journaling and drawing what he saw, rather than surveying. He met Native Americans under friendly circumstances. When George was later sent into Ohio during the French and Indian War, George experienced early military failure--he never wanted to go to war again. But, he was pressed into service again later... and made the President of the United States.
