Both before and during the Prophet's (Sallahu Alahi Wa Salaam) time most people besides the Jews and Christians, worshipped idols but he never did. Even growing up he strongly disliked idols and he had always believed in one God but it wasn't until when he was meditating in a cave one day that God sent an angel to inform Muhammad (saws) that he has been selected by God to be the last and final Messenger to mankind. However, the most important requirement to be a Muslim is the belief in Islamic monotheism - that there is only one God worthy of worship. The second is that Muhammad was the last messenger.
