Despite this, home computers were long in the future. In the 1980's you could USE a computer, in the 1990's you could HAVE a computer. The 1980s was when IBM PCs became popular and found homes in many white-collar offices of the United States.

Microsoft pioneered the home computer in 1992 with the release of Windows 3.1. Even though Windows was not anything new by this time, 3.1 was the first commercially successful version of Windows, and gave Microsoft a big enough name for what was to come-- Windows 95. Windows 95 was very highly anticipated, Microsoft spending millions on advertising to make sure everyone knew what they were up to. Windows 95 was released on August 24, 1995, and 1995 was considered the year computers became mainstream.

Windows 95 was the first "must-have" product-- before Windows 95, things came out quietly and slowly made their way into everyday life. Windows 95 was released in a huge ceremony with a multimillion dollar advertising campaign, to make sure everybody knew about it. Nowadays it's not uncommon to see such a thing. Furthermore, Windows 95 was the first computer with a taskbar and an interface similar to that of today, and it made it easy to connect to the internet, which was still in its infancy at the time.

Don't be mistaken, though. Shortly after Windows 95 was released, Apple began an ad campaign that claimed that a Macintosh computer from 1989 would have the same features and Windows 95. Turns out Apple was lacking in the advertising department.

The same answer could apply to the World Wide Web. Although it was invented in 1989, it didn't become popular until the late 90's, and many who bought their first computer around that time was sure also to get the internet. Most websites from the 90's were goofy-looking, though by 1999 life was well on its way to the way it is today.

When computers were produced as desktop and home computers instead of huge mainframe machines, their popularity increased hugely. Machines such as the early apple, the commodore 64 and the lesser known sinclair. among some others brought affordable computers to the masses.
