Sir Edmund Hillary was part of an unsuccessful New Zealand expedition to Everest in 1951 before attempting again in May1953.

He was part of a British expedition with several members and sherpas who reached base camp in April 1953. By late May Hillary and sherpa Tenzing Norgay were positioned to make a bid for the summit, which they reached at 11:30am local time on 29 May 1953.
