During the winter months mares often are not in heat. Once spring comes and days get longer (March to April) Mares will often begin to go into heat. Typically once they start, every 21 days approximately they go into heat. So they are in heat 3 to 7 days, adn then out of heat for about 14 days, then back. In the fall, when days get shorter, they often stop going into heat or it becomes very erratic. That's what I learned from my research! During the winter months mares often are not in heat. It is generally accepted that breeding season starts in spring however mares can come into season any time. In warmer climates it is not unusual for mares to cycle all year. Most mares come into season every 21 to 28 days and are "in season" for about 5 days

A filly can show signs of heat as early as six months. Normal age for first heat is closer to 1.5 to 2 years. Often these heats result in a persistent CL that prevents

them from returning to estrus until they are physically more mature.

They do. Either because they are pregnant or with advanced age. Although mares have babies in more advanced ages that do most humans. For me the cutoff age would be between 20 to 25 years old, if they have already had at least 1 foal. I would not breed a maiden mare of that age.

Mares' reproductive potential generally starts to decline after age 15. Mares over 20 can start to experience irregular estrous cycles and mares over 25 may stop cycling altogether. As mares get older, they start cycling later in the season than younger mares and cycles may be a few days longer because the follicles take longer to mature.

Depends on the horse breed and on the genetics of the horse. Some breeds are very early at the age of 2. Others start on the age of 4.

Is there anything to do so a mare won't come into heat?

The only reasonable way to "stop" a mare from going into heat, is to keep her with another mare, not a gelding or stallion. having a male around even if they are cut, will encourage the mares cycles to begin. But keeping her away from males may not stop it all together, but it will at least make them less severe.

Will two mares ever get along that constantly try kicking at one another?

Most times, but not always, the kicking will stop when the pecking order is established when one of the mares dominant over the other and the other recognized the dominance. If the kicking does not stop after two or three weeks then they will have to be separated.
