When does the army pay you your enlistment bonus?
In 1924 Congress voted to give WW I veterans a bonus, but not to be paid until 1945. In 1932 the US experienced a period of depression. As a result about 15,000-20000 vets dec…ided they needed their bonuses now and marched on Washington in hopes of pressuring Congress to meet their demand. When Congress, also short of money, refused to appropriate funds for the bonus, they camped out with their families in the U.S. Capitol lawn and the national mall. They became a serious disruption after a few weeks and despite pleas and warnings they refused to leave. Eventually, Hoover sent the U.S. Army to clear them out. The results were chaotic. People were hurt. One man with a weak heart supposedly died and a pregnant woman lost her baby. !932 was an election year and the Democrats made the most of the situation. After being driven off the capitol mall, the protestors set up camp across the river. Roosevelt sent his wife to talk with them. Times were hard and many people had sympathy for the ex-soldiers. The Democratic papers drew a sharp comparison between the heartless Hoover who called out the army to drive the soldiers away and the kindly Roosevelt who sent his wife to listen to their troubles.

It is COMMON for men to serve their time in one branch and then when their time expires to enlist into another branch of service. It ALL adds up to 20 years of service for pen…sion purposes. However, it often does not allow higher or equivalent rank in the next service...sometimes there is a minor down grade upon entry into the next branch of service. But time DOES go by faster when experiencing different branches of service.

An enlistment bonus for the US Army can be up to $40,000.00.However the bonuses are dependent upon the individual scoring overa 50 on the ASVAB and only certain jobs offer a b…onus and vary fromday to day or month to month. The values are dependent upon theneeds of the Army and the needs for that select job. Keep in mindthe bonus is an incentive to enlistment and not a reason to enlistin to the US Army or any Branch of the Military, you have to lookat the other benefits that you could possible receive and weighthem against what you would get in the civilian sector.
Talk to your recruiter and enlist in one of the US military services. You must score over a 50 on the ASVAB just to qualify for a bonus, then your ASVAB scores must be able… to be qualified for a job that is offering a bonus, not all jobs or branches offer a bonus. Don't get to concerned about a bonus be more concerned about the job that you are choosing for the next few years, money will only bring temporary happiness but a good job will lead to ultimate satisfaction.

This is a personal decision based on what you hope to do and hope to gain from the experience. While the Army can mean you may see more places, the Air Force usually assigns s…ervice members to installations for longer durations. This can provide stability if you have a family with you. Many Army MOS's translate very closely to civilian jobs, but most Air Force jobs are directly related to those in the civilian work force. Both will teach you discipline. Both will give you opportunity to learn.
