Balthasar brings Romeo the news of Juliet's "death"
In Act 5 scene 1, Romeo's servant Balthasar arrives in Mantua to bring Romeo news from Verona. He tells Romeo that Juliet was found dead that morning.
At the beginning of the act, he is in Juliet's bedchamber before he goes into exile in Mantua for the rest of the act.
Friar Lawrence sends a message by Friar John to Romeo in exile in Mantua because the whole exercise of drugging Juliet and getting her buried in the tomb would be pointless if Romeo wasn't in on the plan so he could come and scoop her off to Mantua.
