An abbreviation for an academic degree may be placed after a person's name only after the degree has been awarded. A student cannot use the abbreviation for the degree being studied for, but could use the abbreviation for another degree that has already bee awarded. As an example, if Joseph Smith is studying for a doctorate, he cannot style himself "Joseph Smith, Ph.D." However, if he has already been awarded a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science degree, he can style himself "Joseph Smith, BA, MS."
