yes freon is lost, and take into account that along with the gas in a/c, there is a/c oil as well this oil is needed to transport the gas thru the system. so if you dumped the gas and refilled with out the oil, the a/c still is not going to work
LOSS is a noun, it does not have degrees of comparison. Maybe LOST: very lost, the most lost (but it is illogical).

you will need a conversion kit to use r-134a refrigerant (i belive) but if it has lost refrigerant suddenbly then it likely sprung a leak somewhere have it tested and the leak repaired before recharging it.
If you have open your system or lost all of it you could add up to 26oz of R-134a and 5.2oz of Pag 46. However it is strongly suggested to use a recharging gauge and fill your system to the correct PSI level. This is determined by the ambient temp. You can find a Pressure Chart on the website in the link below. On the C 320 it takes 26.4554 oz of R134a freon.......
it might not be a matter of it losing it so to speak, freon can turn to a gas known as SO2 which will dissipate, it depends on how fast it is being lost. most cars require AC to be recharged from time to time, you can do this yourself. They no longer sell Freon, but they sell a "R-134a" recharge kit, which is a safe alternative to freon. SO2 is a very deadly and explosive gas, as well as freon being bad for the environment as a whole.
