When it is right for you. A fair number of high school students go to college the fall after they graduate from high school because they have a fair idea of what they want to study and have the financial backing to do so, through savings, loans, scholarships, grants, parent's support, etc. Others don't know what they want to study or don't have the financial ability to go right after high school so they may wait a year, a decade, a lifetime before they go to college. I saw a very nice article about an 84 year old woman who graduated with a Bachelor's degree after wanting to get the degree her whole life but never having the time between raising kids, taking care of her husband, etc.
The two major variables are knowing what you want to study (so you can quickly focus on the courses you need to take and graduate) and having the financial backing to be able to afford the college you are going to. Once those two things are in place, you are ready to go to college.
