The 5--storey Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC) was completed in 2008. The BWTC towers designed by renowned international architects and engineers, Atkins, are the first of their kind in the world to use wind energy harnessed by three massive turbines, which provide 11 - 15% of the office towers' electricity needs - equivalent to lighting 200 to 250 homes for a year. The wind turbines were successfully installed mid-build in March 2007, commissioned in April 2008 and were officially certified by Bahrain's Electricity Distribution Directorate (EDD) in December 2008. The three 29 diameter turbines are now set to auto-mode meaning they are supplying power to the office towers.
