The earliest colonists were Puritans who had settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, to escape persecution in England. The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded in 1628 and included settlers from John White's abandoned Cape Ann settlement (1624-1625). The largest number of immigrants were led by John Winthrop in 1630. The colonies were combined briefly under King James in 1686, and finally in 1692 under the leadership of Sir William Phips, as the royal colony called the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
