2nd answer. In 1878, Eadweard Muybridge produced what is acknowledged as the first moving picture - a series of photos (of a horse) taken on several cameras, and joined together. Within ten years, movies in the modern sense were being taken.
In early times, much debate centred on the details of the motion of horses hooves. [Hence the frozen look of horses in paintings in early times] In particular, the question was raised of "whether all of a horse's hooves were out of contact with the ground at one time?" This was settled by Muybridge, and a copy of his movie can be seen under his name in wikipedia.
