President McKinley was given a red carnation by a friend while running for office. He felt it was a lucky charm and wore one in his lapel after that. He was not president for long as he was assassinated. September 14 is Red Carnation Day in Ohio. So he wore them from 1897 to 1901 when shortly after he gave his red carnation to a little girl, he was shot while visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.
Because he was originally born in Ohio and he was assassinated and they felt bad for him so they made the Red Carnation (which he wore in his buttonhole of his jacket) their state flower.
