Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus but stored in the posterior pituitary gland. It has a calming effect and also stimulates lactation, allowing women to breastfeed their children. It also stimulates stronger uterus contractions as a woman goes into labor.

Oxytocin and ADH are synthesized by Hypothalamic neurons in the Hypothalamus and then transported along the hypothalamic-hypophyseal tract to the posterior pituitary where they are stored in axon terminals and are released into the blood when the hypothalamic neurons are fired.
