Factors that need to be considered are whether or not there is sufficient lighting where the camera will be monitoring at night, will the camera need to be fully protected from the elements, how much resolution is needed, and whether or not a cable can easily be run to the area where the TV monitor and recording equipment for the cameras is at.
If a camera is going to be mounted in a location where there is insufficient lighting to see the whole protected area at night, night vision cameras should be considered. Though any camera with an infrared LED could technically be called night vision, the true capability for a camera to see in the dark relies on the power of the infrared LEDs. Buying a camera only rated to see up to 20 feet in the dark will do no good for an area that is a hundred feet in depth. In this case either get a camera with LEDs that are rated to shine at a hundred feet or buy a separate infrared light source that is.
Many cameras are weather resistant instead of being weather proof. More than just not allowing water to get into the electronics, real weather proofing goes much further. A sealed camera unit may include a built in heater to warm the electronics during frigid winter temperatures and should have electronic components capable of withstanding daily high temperatures without failing. As far as not allowing water intrusion, look for a rating that indicates the camera is protected from driving rain and hail.
Old surveillance camera designs along with cheap versions still available today use CMOS based cameras. They are available in varying levels of quality from excellent to very poor. The poorer the CMOS camera the more likely burn in will happen. Burn in is when a continual bright area of the image burns it into the sensor. Doors and windows that need to be monitored can burn in an area of a cheap sensor rendering them useless. Instead opt for CCD (Charged Coupled Device) cameras. CCD sensors allow for not only full color but much higher resolution.
Also consider wireless cameras if long cable runs are a problem. However, be aware that even wireless cameras need a power source. They need to be located within reasonable distance to an AC outlet. Do not plug in an outdoor camera into an outlet that can be reached or is not in itself weatherproof. If the outlet can be reached, a criminal can just unplug the camera. Spend some time considering what is needed for your home before making the final choices of surveillance cameras.
