A newspaper organization can be represented diagrammatically by using a hierarchical structure, with the chief editor or editor-in-chief at the top, followed by managing editors, section editors, reporters, and other staff like photographers and designers. Lines can be drawn to show reporting relationships and communication flow within the organization.

It is often difficult to pin down to a particular diagrammatic representation of a newspaper organization, for, every organization follows different management system and departments. Yet a typical representation of newspaper organization could be safely presented this way.

An organization is headed chiefly by the Managing Director (MD) who solely owns the organization except when it is a joint venture, a partnership venture or if the organization is a part of a bigger news agency or conglomerate.

There are most importantly, about theree major departments in the organization, namely, the Reporting or Desk, the Editing Department and if considered well, the Commercial Department also plays a major role. It contains one of the most important brnaces of the organization - the revenue-earner or the 'salary-giver', - the 'Advertising Department'. This section takes care of selling spaces to buyars such as industries or service-providers so that advertisement can be printed. A part of advetising department, in certain cases, might also act as the PR or some of them have the role of Promoting the newspaper.

The Desk headed by the News Editors has all the reporters under him. The reporters are seated according to their seniority from 'Chief-Reporters' to 'Senior-Reporters' under whom are further 'Reporters'. The Trainees (Internees) lie in the lowest because of their inexperience. Reporting jobs are assigned by the Chief, or the Senior Reporters according to specializations and beats of people. Major news are mostly covered by Senior Reporters.

Similarly in the Editing Section, people are placed according to their rank and seniority. Headed by the Associate Editor, all the news that first come to the organization are dispersed according to different specialization of Editing sections down to the Chief Sub-Editors, followed by Senior Editors, other Subs and lastly the Internees.

There are various other departments of the organization that play important roles. The Circulation Department looks after the disperse and circulation of the papers. The Finance Department looks after monetary and economic issues. Mechanical Department includes all the technical works, mechanical or software services needed for the production. This also includes the Stereotyped Department which looks after the reverse printing of the words from the rolled metal sheet to the paper.

While this is one way of looking at the working of a newspaper organization, it should be kept in mind that ways, methods and departments varies in different organizations.

Historically, that has varied, but in general, the top news (the biggest stories of the day) has been placed on page 1. The top news stories might be about politics or about a current event like the revolution in Egypt or a tragic plane crash. In the old print newspaper era (and still in traditional print newspapers today), the biggest story of all was placed on the top part of the paper, which was called "above the fold." (When the paper was sold at a news-stand, it was folded first, and the above-the-fold story was the one that was visible as people passed by.) Today, websites will place the top story first, so that when you click on the link to that site, the first story you see is the biggest one.

As for other parts of the newspaper, there is often a "metro" section for local news, a sports section, a lifestyle section (it used to be called the "women's page", but these days it is about food, fashion, celebrity news, home decorating, etc., and not just women read it), and an editorial/opinion section-- this is sometimes just one page, but in some publications, it is more than one. There is also a comics section in many newspapers. As for where a story is placed, it is not always stuck within its particular section. For example, newspapers will place a sports story on the front page of the paper (this is also true in magazines, where the cover story may be related to any field-- politics, sports, entertainment, whatever) if the sports story is about an issue that transcends just the typical sports fan. A good example is how most newspapers played Baseball's steroid scandal of several years ago as a front-page news story rather than just a sports-page story.
