The tax charged you must be on the receipt and identified is the important thing. Because it is YOUR responsibility to pay the tax to the State (as a "use" tax if the vendor doesn't charge it - which there are many reasons he may not). So, unless a licenced vendor shows it on the receipt he gives you that he collected the tax, YOU must be ready to prove YOU paid the tax, to either a vendor or to the State or YOU owe it.

You cannot find out anything about the vendors account other than that they are a licensed vendor. And consider they may file using one name/sales tax account for businesses that operate under many different names and locations. So you may not even know what name to ask for.

Most all retail vendors (and even other types of business) have their sales tax licence displayed somewhere. (Like all these legal types of things, employee notices, business licenses, health department etc), and perhaps it will say how long they have been licensed. But that doesn't mean anything as they may change that account, or the name, addresses (if any) many times for lots of business reasons. (Most licences/accounts have nothing to do with a specific address - especially in Texas, where tax can change by district, almost street by street, maybe totalling the same rate as another, but payable to different town/county. The vendor must calculate and report the correct amount for each different place.)

Obviously, as the amount of tax paid over (and when, and where, etc) can reveal many highly proprietary and important business information it is exceptionally confidential.

On top of that, like most things regarding others tax and financial records, it is simply none of your business.

Is there a Texas Law that says that restaurant equipment is exempt from sales tax If there is what about if I'm ordering the equipment from a vendor in another state?

Generally taxes are based solely on the state that YOU live in. For example, I work for a restaurant supply company and there are some products that we do not charge tax or shipping on if the customer is out of state. If they are in the same state, however, they are charged our state tax. It usually depends on the company and what state you live in.
