Extended warranties are also referred to as "service agreements" or "service contracts." Depending what what the item is and where one purchased the item, an agreement can be made to add accessories, lower costs, add in delivery etc. Extended warranties are purchased from the store and they cover problems and defects that the 1 year limited warranty from the manufacturer does not cover. For example Best buy offers extended warranties on their laptops for an extra charge for 3 years. This covers things that happen to the laptop after the manufacturer warranty.

Here's a great article from Edmunds that talks about extended warranties: http://www.edmunds.com/advice/warranties/articles/47681/article.html. I never do - I figure if you properly maintain your care and make repairs when necessary, you shouldn't have to do enough work to make a warranty necessary. If you buy a good-quality car that is known to last then you shouldn't need a long warranty.
