In 1840, Lincoln became engaged to Mary Todd, from a wealthy slaveholding family based in Lexington, Kentucky.[20] They met in Springfield in December 1839,[21] and were engaged sometime around that Christmas.[22] A wedding was set for January 1, 1841, but the couple split as the wedding approached.[21]They later met at a party, and then married on November 4, 1842, in the Springfield mansion of Mary's married sister.

∙ 10y agoMary Todd was living with her married sister in Springfield, Illinois, when she met Abraham Lincoln at a dance. She said later that he told her he wanted to dance with her "in the worst possible way." "And he did," she added. Lincoln was also living in Springfield at the time.
In December 1839, Abe visited the home of Ninian W. Edwards and his wife Elizabeth. Mary Todd is Elizabeth's younger sister, which is how Abe and Mary met.
