Dickens's education began at William Giles's School, Chatham. However, his private school career ended in 1824 when his father was sent to jail after amassing debt. Dickens attended Wellington House Academy in London between 1824 and 1827. He left school aged 15 and began working as a clerk in a solicitor's office.
During Dickens's time, schooling was largely reserved for wealthy children or those who could afford to pay for it. Schools were often overcrowded, lacked proper facilities and resources, and focused on rote memorization. Education for the poor was minimal and often consisted of charity schools or workhouse schools. Child labor was also common, with many children working long hours instead of attending school.
