Erik the reds parents left Norway due to manslaughter along with him, the family settled in Hornstrandir in west Iceland. The Icelanders later sentenced Erik to a three year exile for several murders around the year 982. As he was exiled he set sail west and found a new land "Greenland". After marring Thorild he moved to Haukadal (Hawksdale) where he built a farm. When his slaves started a landslide on the neighbouring farm Valthjof. Valthjof's friend, Eyiolf, killed the slaves. When Thorget borrowed a shovel from Erik and refused to return it Erik stool the shovel back and in a later case killed Thorget. The second case happened when Erik wanted revenge on Valthjof for killing his slaves when they 'accidently started a land slide.' Valthjof murderously punished the slaves. Erik didn't take this kindly and so he killed Valthjof. The Icelanders eventually convicted Erik for these murders and banished him from Iceland. This event lead Erik to a group of followers to travel the lands nearly 500 miles away.
