Washington did not have any formal schooling. He was an apprentice to a surveyor, a British military officer in the War of 1812, General of American forces in the revolution, and President. He was also a plantation owner. His schooling was very limited. An education man in his time knew how to speak and write French, but Washington did not. Since he was a second son it was expected that he would get some formal training through an apprenticeship ( which he did) to be able to support himself. When he married Martha she was a wealthy widow and this gave him the means to go beyond the standard of living that he may have normally had. The French and Indian War also gave him a means to go to Congress in 1776 and cite that he was the man to command the American troops. He was smart, very political, and had the ability to command people.
