Many things point to Luke the Physician as being the author of the Gospel of Luke as well as the Book of Acts.

The Gospel of Luke came from God, and is one side of a four view look at the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. We have four gospels and at times feel that they do no explain as much as we would like to know about God our Savior. How unfortunate we would be if we only had one gospel.

We do not actually know who actually wrote Luke's Gospel, since it was originally anonymous, and was only attributed by the Church Fathers to Luke the physician companion of Paul, later in the second century. The gospel was written is Greek Koine, the lingua franca of the Near East, so we can say that he probably came from somewhere in this region. Beyond this, we can only speculate.

As to the source that the author used in writing his gospel, biblical scholars have demonstrated that much of Luke was copied direct from the Gospel of Mark. The author, in common with the author of Matthew's Gospel, also relied on sayings material from the hypothetical 'Q' document. He made use of Old Testament references to show that the life of Jesus was prefigured there, although to a lesser extent than in Matthew. Finally, it appears that the author may have used some material from the works of the first century Jewish historian Josephus, to provide historical context.
