To perambulate comes from the Late Latin meaning to walk about. A method of transporting children was 'made ' in 1773 for the Duke of Devonshire to carry his children about. They were origionally pulled by a goat or pony, people without these animals had to push them. In 1889 a further development made a 'pram' which developed into the object we know today. The usage of the word changed from 'walk about' to a child or baby carrier.
