No one knows for sure since we were not around back then but there is a great book called "Man Meets Dog" by Konrad Lorenz in 1953 in which he discusses the origin of the dog/human relationship. His theory is that all dogs originated from either wolves or jackals and that many of the characteristics of our current dogs can be traced back to those origins. The main thread seems to be that jackal based breeds are more doting and wolf based breeds are more independent and aloof.
There are many thoughts and hypotheses, but in reality, no one has a true accurate timeframe or location regarding the exact origins of the dog or its domestication history. We do know that its closest ancestor is the wolf, taxonomically it forms part of the group of animals called Canidae, these include wolves, jackals, coyotes, dingoes, and foxes. It is now widely accepted that the modern dog has wolf like traits and is almost certainly derived from wolf stock
