The idea for the internet came from visionary thinkers who saw great value in computers being able to communicate and share information with one another. Considering the internet was developed by the government in the experimental division known as DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), it was expected to be primarily used for military purposes. Specifically, it would allow for communication in the case a nuclear attack knocked out the existing communication network.
