New ships can be purchased from the Ship Shape shipbuilders at Dragon Cove. Normally, you will buy larger ships as you can afford them, because they will have larger cargo spaces and more cannons.
At Dragon Cove (top left island on the map), there is an open door just past the Trading Post. Enter and see the man on the left. You cannot buy a new ship if you have an overdue unpaid loan from the bank.

Get the Jimmy Rigger as your first ship.
You do not have to buy the Warbird as your only ship. Normally, you will buy the ship that is next larger from your current one, then trade with it awhile to earn the doubloons for the next larger ship. As your available cargo space grows, you will earn ever-larger amounts of salvage, and make more profit. You can get ships faster with a loan from the Golden Harbor Bank (but they charge interest). When you have half of the price of the next larger ship, borrow the difference, then repay it using the larger ship. Eventually you will have the Warbird, which you need to defeat Captain Crawfish.
