Lichens are found almost everywhere. They are highly adaptable to a range of environments, including extreme conditions such as deserts and the Arctic tundra. They are, however, most common in damp places such as rainforests and temperate forests, and places where there is little or no sunlight. They can commonly be found on the ground or growing on surfaces such as trees (living and dead) but are not restricted to these places.

Lichen can be found growing on trees and rocks. One characteristic of lichen is its unique ability to grow in inhospitable environments including geologically active areas.
