Gilead posted soldiers at the crossing points, and stopped anyone trying to cross. They would make the person say the word "Shibboleth"- a word that meant the part of a plant that has grain. The Emphriamites spoke a different language, and spoke the word as "Sibboleth"- and were thus identified as enemies. The today it means a word or phrase whose pronunciation identifies a speaker as belonging to a particular group.
