The Tuscarora Deep is a submarine terrain feature along the entire east coast of Honshu, the main island of Japan. It is continuous with the Kuril Trench to the north and the Marianas Trench to the south. It was discovered by USS Tuscarora during a series of voyages in 1873-74 to explore the idea of laying a submarine telegraphic cable from the US to Japan. At the time it was believed to be the deepest part of any ocean, but it was later learned that the southern end of the Marianas Trench is deeper.
