Mint marks are on the front near Miss Liberty's feet, on the left-side pedestal. You will need a good magnifying glass to see them.

The right-side pedestal will have a small "M" which is the designer's initial (H. A. MacNeil). The mint mark can be one of the following: Blank = Philadelphia

D = Denver

S = San Francisco

If it has one it will be on the back under the eagle. It will either be blank or have a O or S. O is for New Orleans. S is for San Fransisco and blank being for Philadelphia.

Should a real 1974 US quarter have a mint mark?

US coins minted before 1979-1981 (the exact date varies with the coin) don't necessarily have a mint mark. Coins without a mint mark were minted at the US Mint facility in Philadelphia. Since 1981, all coins except for the US cent will have a mint mark; for Philadelphia it will be a "P". US cents, often misnamed "pennies," minted in Philadelphia still do not carry a mint mark even through 2007.
