take the valve cover off and it should be located toward the rear of the engine write across from numder 4 intake valve

try crank position sensor and cam shaft sensor
There is a sensor on the cam shaft that may be effecting things.
The cam sensor on a 1996 Mercury Villager cost about $35 to $40. The sensor is actually manufactured by a Nissan subsidiary.
On the cylinder head close to the thermostat housing.
probably cam positionong sensor.
there isn't one ( 96 it start that year) you only have a cam sensor in the base of the distributor.
get a new cam position sensor (about $35)
it is located on the lower left side of the timing cover
well i have a 96 stratus and mine was 34.99 at oreillys
The camshaft position sensor is on top of the engine. It is on top of a shaft in the same place that older rangers had a distributor.
