The word mockingbird is only in the book To Kill a Mockingbird once or twice.

Only twice. The title comes from theses quotes: "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy... but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
- Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

'Remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.' That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it."

A mockingbird is referenced in the title and throughout the novel as symbolizing innocence, purity, and goodness. Atticus tells Scout and Jem that it is a sin To Kill a Mockingbird because they only sing for people's enjoyment and do no harm. The characters of Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are compared to mockingbirds in the story.

Tom Robinson and Boo (Arthur) Radley. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they are innocent and do not harm you. Tom Robinson is actually innocent as Mayella was never raped but was beaten by Bob Ewell, not Tom, but in the end he gets convicted solely because he is a black man. Hence, that is an example of killing a mockingbird symbolically. In the case of Boo Radley, he is not accepted by the town of Maycomb, but in the end turns out to be innocent at the end where he helps Scout and Jem to fight Bob Ewell. Thus, this is another case of the symbolical mockingbird.
