The Seven Gates of Hell is a completely fictitious legend. One can find many references to it on the web, including how to get to the seventh gate and its exact location. There are seven because one or two would be boring and not much of an adventure. However, once at the seventh gate, which is at the end of Toad road now called Trout Run road in York, Pa. (where people still live), most are chased out by the local residents or the police are called. There are no trespassing signs all around in an attempt to stem the tide of mentally/emotionally challenged visitors who actually, literally believe any of these gates are real. Many postings found on the internet discuss people who have visited and how it went, often times with incredible observations. The most astounding are the posts who write in disgust how they were chased away by the loony, crazy residents or cops, apparently oblivious that it is THEY who took time out of their lives to pursue in idiotic camp fire story thinking it to be real and THEY who are the loony, crazy ones. The Seven Gates fans are a sub-sub fringe culture of the paranormal community, and in investigating their communications and beliefs one gets a sense that they are not very well educated, sometimes have psychological issues and many times are very young (early teens) and therefore not mature enough to separate fact from fiction. As for those who are of age and actually make time to track down a fairytale instead of taking a college course, reading great literature, learning a second language, dating ect…think of them as Dungeon and Dragon type fanatics, or Trekkers who know every level of the Enterprise from memory. Many of those who do actually travel there and "investigate" and somehow avoid being arrested (or fined 300 dollars) for trespassing, are embarrassed when they find only a sparsely wooded area and further on a few rock remains of what used to be a hospital. Feeling ashamed, many almost never return to the net to post there was nothing to it for fear of ridicule. Others, feeling had, decide to 'get back' at other people by fooling them like they had been fooled - they return to the net and report how their cell phone went out after the third gate. Or how such and such gate turns red at night, or things fly at your head after the fifth gate or, even, that no one knows what happens after the seventh gate because you're, well....in hell then and can't report back. Such is the way legends build, whether urban or global. The story takes a life of its own, and who doesn't like a good yarn? In summation, the Seven Gates of Hell is a camp fire story and has no basis in reality.

Whether the Gates of Hell are literal, physical gates, or actually something that exists in the spiritual world alone is a matter of considerable debate. Nonethless, it has been theorised that the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan holds the gates to hell, in the form of its Darvaz crater, a huge hole which seems to burn without stopping. See the related link. Further information:In mythology, the Seven Gates of Hell is a completely fictitious legend.
