The esophagus is located just behind the trachea (windpipe), in the neck. It's at the end of your oral cavity down your neck and to your stomach. It is the muscular tube that links the mouth to the stomach. You cannot feel your esophagus in your throat because the trachea is in front of it.

Your esophagus is located in your neck. When you swallow food, a part of your neck branches off to two places: Your lungs and your esophagus. Food travels down your esophagus until it reaches your stomach. There is a flap in the junction of the lungs and esophagus which prevent food from going into your lungs. When this malfunctions, it is commonly refered to as 'going down the wrong pipe'.

The esophagus connects the pharynx to the stomach. Pharynx lies on the backside of your mouth and stomach lies in your abdomen. It is a tube like structure. Esophagus passes through your thorax from the backside. It acts as a passage for food, on the way to stomach.
