Will reading glasses help you if you have myopia?
Myopia is a condition where the eye is unable to adjust its focus accurately beyond a certain distance. If you have myopia then you usually do not need glasses in order to see things clearly close up. Wearing reading glasses of the type sold at the pharmacy without a prescription will probably not make the text you are seeing clearer. In fact when you look through them distant objects will be blurrier; and if your degree of myopia is high enough, or the reading glasses strong enough, you will not be able to read through them, either! However, if your degree of myopia is low, then reading glasses may help you by preventing an increase of blur for distant objects after reading. This increase in blur is called "nearwork induced transient myopia" and is caused by prolonged focusing at a very near distance. Essentially your eyes get "stuck" focusing for the near point and distant objects appear more blurred than normal for a period of time. Reading glasses allow your eyes to focus as if for further away during the time you are reading. For this reason they may allow you to read longer without strain, because closer focusing requires more energy, and more contraction of the focusing muscles. Whether using reading glasses will improve your distant vision is a complex issue and a subject of debate among optometrists. Some argue that nearwork-induced transient myopia is a precursor to an increase in myopia. If this is true, then using reading glasses may prevent further deterioration of distant vision. Others say that in placebo-controlled clinical studies with special glasses with a "reading" section at the bottom and a "distance" section at the top (bifocals or progressive lenses), such glasses have had no effect on the progression of myopia. Still others argue that reading glasses must be used aggressively and consciously used in order to have any positive effect on vision.

From what my eye professional told me, NO. Usually in the range of -10 to -12 is the max they can correct with laser and offer good results. There is the possibility of reducing the myopia where you would still need to use correction, but once you have the LASIK you are not a candidate for soft lenses; hence correction must be achieved by either conventional glasses or Gas Permeable Rigid Contacts.

The genetic component is more important in the more severe pathological myopias of very high powers (arbitrarily over a -10.00) while the environment is more important in the much more common myopia that often starts during the school years.Current research is showing two main methods of slowing or stopping myopic progression: Control of peripheral hyperopia and increased outdoor time.Peripheral HyperopiaEyes that are in-focus centrally, whether naturally or with normal contact lenses or glasses, often have a different focus peripherally. Peripheral hyperopia, where the image is focused behind the peripheral retina, results in myopic progression. The opposite is also true: peripheral myopia is protective against myopic progression. The mechanism of action is telling the eyeball to either grow longer or stop growing.These feedback systems (hyperopia = grow longer, myopia = stop growing) are active during the process of emmetropization which allows an infant's eye to stay in focus as it matures and grows significantly. There may also be one or more unknown factors.The effect is not dependent on the amount of near work or reading. In other words, children spending time outdoors do not have to reduce their reading for the effect to be significant.SummaryAt the present time, the best method of slowing myopia is to spend more time outdoors and investigate methods of creating peripheral myopia with your doctor.
