The Liberty Bell 7 (the capsule for the Mercury 4 mission) was not recovered at the end of the mission like most capsules. It sank in the Atlantic because the craft's hatch was opened too soon (apparently due to a malfunction) and it began filling with water before the recovery helicopter could get a cable attached. It was ultimately retrieved, but not until nearly 38 years after the mission. == ==
