Corporal punishment was used most in the great English public schools during the 17th and 18th centuries. Birching (i.e. flogging with the birch) was endemic in these schools at that time, with as many as 50 floggings taking place every day. Floggings were administered to the bare buttocks with the miscreant boy mounted on a specially designed piece of furniture called a 'flogging block'. The excessive amount of flogging resulted in a number of riots and rebellions at some schools, notably Eton and Rugby, where the army had to be called in to quell the rebels.
