The term yellow journalism often is used to describe the press during the period from about 1895 to about 1900 when the fight between William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal and Joseph Pulitzer's New York World intensified, and both papers were sensationalizing the news in order to boost circulation. The term was coined by the editor of the New York Press Erwin Wardman.

Yellow journalism reported the news in a sensationalist and exaggerated manner, often focusing on scandalous and lurid stories to attract readers. It employed eye-catching headlines, exaggerated stories, and even blatant misinformation to sell newspapers. This style of journalism prioritized attracting readers over accuracy and objectivity.

It was used by jouirnalists Hearst and Pulitzer to sell more papers and at the same time stirred up war fever amongst the American public. They played on the emotions of Americans by publishing undocumented stories of atrocities in Cuba as well as telling the people that the USS Maine was in fact destroyed by the Spanish. To this day there is no real proof as to whether or not the ship hit a SPanish mine or some internal explosion sunk the ship.
