as of June 25, 2009 the album "Thriller" hasn't been knocked out of the No. 1 spot.
I believe the original poster meant what album eventually displaced Thriller from the #1 position on the weekly Billboard charts (NOT overall album sales).
The correct answer would be.... after 37 consecutive weeks at #1, Thriller was de-throned by Flashdance original soundtrack recording in May of 1983, a surprise hit that sold 700,000 copies in it's first two weeks.
Actually, it started off as #9 on the charts, Business as Usual by Men at Work was the #1 that first week. It then spent 2 weeks at #5, then #4, then stayed at one. During that time, it was knocked off a couple times, only to raise back up. In late June '83, the soundtrack to Flashdance. In late July '83, Sychronicity by the Police and yet again the soundtrack to Flashdance. And then back at #1 and back down all throughout the next couple years, but April 14th of '84 was the last time it was #1, because the next week, the Footloose soundtrack became #1, followed by 1984 by Van Halen and Can't Slow Down by Lionel Richie. Did you know it never actually got OFF the chart until the very very end of the decade?!
