Meat is not the only source of protein, so vegetarians have a choice in the foods they can eat, depending on the type of vegetarian they are. The following foods have protein:

  • Dairy - milk, cheese, yogurt,
  • Eggs
  • Legumes - beans, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), peas
  • Nuts And nut butters - (peanut butter, cashew butter...)

One of the best soy products is Edemame . It is the whole bean of the soy plant, and provides all 8 essential amino acids that the body needs; it has no cholesterol or trans-fats. In addition to being a high protein food, it is one of the highest fiber foods available.

It can be purchased as a snack, roasted, and can also be purchased frozen (in the frozen food section) shelled, or in the pod. The cooking time for it is very minimal, so preparation is extremely easy and quick.

You can also buy soy milk at any grocery store; it has become quite popular among vegetarians, as well as those who are watching their cholesterol intake. There are also soy protein shakes and supplements available in many grocery and natural/ health food stores.

All plant foods contain some protein. However, to get concentrated protein, look to nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, tofu and soy products, seitan (a wheat product). Quinoa is a yummy grain that tastes a bit like a cross between rice and corn, is easy to fix, and is a complete protein all by itself. It only takes 15 minutes to prepare and can be used in any way that rice can. Rice and beans together also make a complete protein.
