When the war began the General in Chief was Winfield Scott, 75 years old, in the position since 1839, an authentic hero of the War of 1812 and the genius of the Mexican War. Ruthlessly humiliated by the arrogant George McClellan, Scott resigned from the Army in 1862 (after 54 years of service) and was replaced by McClellan. As it developed few shared McClellan's extremely high opinion of himself, once they had a chance to see him in inaction. McClellan was relieved as General in Chief later in 1862, though he continued for a time as commander of the Army of the Potomac, the principal Union field army in the east. Henry W. Halleck, who had claimed credit for the achievements of his subordinant Grant, was brought east and tried as General in Chief for a year or so, though he immediately showed his lack of capacity. Finally, Halleck was replaced by Ulysses S. Grant, who rather than make his headquarters in Washington, stayed with the Army of the Potomac, though George Meade remained in command of that Army, under Grant.
