Answer:
As the name suggests the International Space Station (ISS) was worked on by several nations. It features parts of several space station projects. Overall it was better return on investment to have many partners involved in the project.
The projects include:
The initial installation (first completed portion) was the Russian Zarya which was launched in 1998 by Russia. There are now 14 modules including contributions by Canada.
Supplying the station has been done by Russian and American quipment. With the end of the American shuttle program Russia will pick up the full weight of this task.
Currently right now the International Space Station is the only space station in orbit. It has however been the only space station with such international participation that it can be really be considered international. Countries, including the US, have sent astronauts to Russia's former space station Mir. Just because the International Space Station is international, doesn't necessarily mean that every country uses it. Their are 15 countries that contribute to the ISS program including the US, Russia, Canada, Japan, and several European countries.

There are five major countries including the E.U.
It is a co-operation of many different countries involved in crewing it, building it and providing experiments for it to work on. It is a truly international space station.
