It is generally accepted that the Sphinx was built about 2500 BC by Pharaoh Khafra (c2575 BC- c2465 BC) during the Old Kingdom, the age of the Great Pyramid builders.
Although the dates of its construction and completion are uncertain, the head of the Great Sphinx is believed to be that of Khafra (alternately Khafre or Khaefra).
There is possible evidence that the monument may be older than this*. An inscription within the Great Pyramid, dating from 600 BC, records that Pharaoh Khufu (Khafra's father) carried out repairs on the Sphinx's tail and headdress.
However as with virtually everything to do with the pyramids and sphinx, nothing is certain.
Theory of an Earlier Origin
There are clues that suggest the Sphinx is far older than the arbitrary dates assigned to it, during a time when Egypt was a vast savanna with lakes, rivers and grasslands, along with a high annual rainfall. Geologists found water erosion marks at the base of the sphinx that wouldn't have formed under desert conditions, and Egypt was definitely under desert conditions when Khufu was the pharaoh.
An African scholar named C. Diop used oral histories to make a map of the ancient Sahara. His map contained lakes, rivers and creeks, which suggested the Sahara was a vast savanna before it became a desert.
He commissioned NASA to do a microwave probe of the desert to prove his point. NASA shot a microwave beam 16' below the desert surface and found his findings and map to be essentially accurate. Those findings were further supported by the discovery of paintings and carvings on rock formations in the heart of the Saharan Desert that depict inhabitants fishing and herding animals that haven't existed in the desert for thousands upon thousands of years. The Sphinx is mostly the native limestone carved in situ, and could not have been carved with anything softer than iron, especially with such precision. In South Africa they've discovered 40 thousand year old mines where iron ore was extracted. They used charcoal deposits to carbon date the mines. This charcoal was used in ancient times to extract iron from ore.
His conclusion was that Africans who inhabited the Sahara before it became a desert built the Sphinx. It has an animal head on top of a human body to symbolize the animal nature in all humans. Either we control it, or it controls us, which is the difference between being civilized and being barbaric.
