The Great Sphinx

The Great Sphinx is a statue that was built more than 4,500 years ago by Chephren's workers. It has the face of Chephren and the body of a lion. Over the years, part of the uraeus (sacred cobra), the nose and the ritual beard have fallen apart, though this does not stop tourists from taking a step back into the past.

The purpose of the structure of the Great Sphinx?

Generally the role of sphinxes was as temple guardians; they were placed in association with architectural structures such as royal tombs or religious temples. The great Sphinx is part of a complex which consists not only of the sphinx itself, but also of its old temple, a New Kingdom temple and some other small structures. It is also closely related to Khafre's Valley Temple, which itself had four colossal sphinx statues each more than 26 feet long. Working east there is the pyramid of Khafre then Funerary Temple of Khafre which is linked by a cause way to the Great Sphinx which is facing east at the Temple of the Sphinx. See the links below.

Who built the Sphinx?

It is generally accepted that the Sphinx was built about 2500 BC by Pharaoh Khafra (c2575 BC- c2465 BC) during the Old Kingdom, the age of the great pyramid builders.
Although the dates of its construction and completion are uncertain, the head of the Great Sphinx is believed to be that of Khafra (alternately Khafre or Khaefra).
There is possible evidence that the monument may be older than this*. An inscription within the Great Pyramid, dating from 600 BC, records that Pharaoh Khufu (Khafra's father) carried out repairs on the Sphinx's tail and headdress.
However as with virtually everything to do with the pyramids and sphinx, nothing is certain.
Theory of an Earlier Origin
There are clues that suggest the Sphinx is far older than the arbitrary dates assigned to it, during a time when Egypt was a vast savanna with lakes, rivers and grasslands, along with a high annual rainfall. Geologists found water erosion marks at the base of the sphinx that wouldn't have formed under desert conditions, and Egypt was definitely under desert conditions when Khufu was the pharaoh.
An African scholar named C. Diop used oral histories to make a map of the ancient Sahara. His map contained lakes, rivers and creeks, which suggested the Sahara was a vast savanna before it became a desert.
He commissioned NASA to do a microwave probe of the desert to prove his point. NASA shot a microwave beam 16' below the desert surface and found his findings and map to be essentially accurate. Those findings were further supported by the discovery of paintings and carvings on rock formations in the heart of the Saharan Desert that depict inhabitants fishing and herding animals that haven't existed in the desert for thousands upon thousands of years. The Sphinx is mostly the native limestone carved in situ, and could not have been carved with anything softer than iron, especially with such precision. In South Africa they've discovered 40 thousand year old mines where iron ore was extracted. They used charcoal deposits to carbon date the mines. This charcoal was used in ancient times to extract iron from ore.
His conclusion was that Africans who inhabited the Sahara before it became a desert built the Sphinx. It has an animal head on top of a human body to symbolize the animal nature in all humans. Either we control it, or it controls us, which is the difference between being civilized and being barbaric.

How did the Great Sphinx lose its nose?

The weathering and erosin made the Sphinx nose fall off. And people in Egypt say they found part of the beard between his paws.

Over time many theories have been brought forward to explain the disappearance of the great Sphinx of Giza's nose.

However it is generally accepted that what happened to the nose is as the Egyptian historian al-Maqrizi wrote in the 15th century.

He says that the nose was destroyed in, 1378, by a Sufi fanatic by the name of Muhammad Sa'im al-Dahr, who enraged by the lifelike representation of a human face he ordered the nose removed as it was something that was expressly forbidden by Islam.

There is some evidence suggests that this may very well be the case as there are tool marks where the nose was suggesting it was broken or levered-off.

The most generally accepted case is that the Ottoman Mamelukes, despotic Islamic overlords of Egypt, shot the nose off the Sphinx, using it as target practice.

Why did the ancient Egyptians build the Sphinx?

As a guardian of the pyramid tombs of the kings.

We do not actually know that because no records were made regarding why it was commissioned.

The Sphinx was built to represent the reigning Pharaoh in the form of a lion and/or god. If you look at pictures of the Sphinx, you can see that it has a human's face (in spite of the fact that the nose is broken).

to honor their queen and king

Can you special summon andro sphinx and sphinx teleia from your deck using pyramid of light?

No. The card Pyramid of Light only states "If this face-up card is removed from your side of the field, destroy "Andro Sphinx" and "Sphinx Teleia" on your side of the field and remove them from play."

Pyramid of Light has no other effect other than that but you can special summon those 2 monsters by paying 500 LP each if you have Pyramid of Light in the field. This is part of their own effect, usable when they are in hand. It is not part of Pyramid of Light's effect.
