The American promoters of wrestling at fairgrounds and carnivals had mostly switched to 'worked' matches by 1880 but 'shoot' (real) wrestling matches were not unheard of in the pro-wrestling world as late as the 1950s. Lou Thesz, for example, had a very hard time winning all his supposedly pre-determined matches when he was chosen as the first NWA World champion as many holders of regional titles didn't like losing in front of their home crowds and so started 'shooting' on Thesz in order to keep their titles, forcing Thesz to legitimately beat these opponents in 'real' matches.
