The original icons for the Macintosh were created by Susan Kare. Clarus the dogcow (so known because it was undecided if the image represented a dog or a cow) makes a "Moof" sound (which is a bit of a woof with some moo mixed in).
The Macintosh introduced to the computer market the idea of a graphical desktop with icons representing files. The files could be stored in folders, which are icons linked to a particular directory on the hard disc, which people found easier to work with.

They didn't have icons, they had a blank screen with a flashing cursor. There was no such thing as a Windows type interface. You would type in commands to tell the computer what to do.
