first, they followed a set of rules called the bushido, which was a code of honor. But, in physical, living and vital terms they answered to the daimyo, who were powerful territorial lords. These answered to the shogan (bakufu in Japan) which were much like generals in modern euro-american equivalency. And finally they all answered to the Emperor, which were defiantly put on a pedestal throughout time (for example became known as Son of Heaven in the 7th century, this was three centuries before the time of the samurai, but yet they were not named this unit roughly the 13th century.
A Samurai, Daimyo and Shogan would give their life for their superiors, even if it meant plunging their own weapon into their stomachs.
