Jacques Cartier was looking for a northwest passage to Asia when he explored the St. Lawrence River and parts of what is now Canada in the 16th century. He was hoping to find a water route to Asia that would make trade easier.

Lasalle thought that the Northwest Passage was the Ohio River. He eventually found out it wasn't.
Jacques Cartier's exploration was important because he mapped the St. Lawrence River in Canada, making it easier for later European exploration and colonization. He also established France's claim to Canada and helped pave the way for further exploration of North America.
